Abstract

This study aimed to explore characteristics of the exhibits and question types preferred by elementary school science gifted students during the field experience learning at a science museum, Busan National Science Museum. The research subject of 40 students participated in an ‘advanced science and technology creativity camp’ and responded to pre- and post survey instruments respectively with nine questions about exhibits. The students’ questions were analyzed by using an analysis framework of six questioning types; basic, exploring, analyzing, thinking, extended, and complex. The results are as follows: First, elementary science gifted students showed differences in preferred exhibits by three subject areas; science principles, industrial technology, and advanced science and five main topics; vehicle, aerospace, naval architecture, energy, and radiation medicine. Second, elementary school science gifted students preferred specific exhibits which allow them to operate autonomously as direct experience. Third, the basic type of questioning showed the highest percentage in the pre-survey. Fourth, the exploring type of questioning showed the highest percentage in the post-survey. Overall, there were distinct differences in preferred exhibits and questioning type ratio among three subject areas and five main topics between pre- and post survey. It was concluded that it would be desirable for the science museum exhibits to more actively secure the form and quality of the presentation that induces more open and divergent questions for elementary school science gifted students.
