By viewing first-generation Kyopo narratives as life stories, this study aims atuncovering how the ‘immigrant’ experience, that is, ‘immigrating to a country’and ‘being an immigrant’, forms social and personal identities throughstory-telling. A particular focus will be on the various modes of how anindividual explains an autobiographical self according to relevance of expressionand sense-making in interviews. The analysis will spotlight how, in interviewnarratives, first-generation Kyopos present the migration situation andinterpersonal relationships in a migrant’s life; how selected stories and theaccounts and interpretations of one’s self therein depict their lives and imbue aspecific meaning to it; and how their stance and justification thereof construct anautobiographical self. On a macro-level, the narrative analysis will shed light onthe thematic sub-topic development within the stories, while a micro-analysis ofthe storyteller’s stance and evaluation reveals identity-constructing indexicalexpressions. By doing thus, the meanings of identity-construction spanning theentire interview as well as local sites of identity-construction are beingcross-examined, and the sense-making function of an identity in re-constructionwill be further discussed as it is being developed into a moral value byfirst-generation Kyopos.
