“복지동천” 이념의 19세기적 전개와 우복동 설화의 성립

Abstract

This article aims to examine the characteristics of the folktales related to Ubok-dong, Bokdongcheon, which is said to have been in Songnisan Mountain. The story related to Ubok-dong suddenly appeared in the 19th century and swept the central part of the Korean Peninsula for more than a century. In the 19th century, in the central region from Seoul to Cheongju and Sangju, there were many people who wanted to visit Ubok-dong to enjoy the welfare. For such people, books were even built to tell them what Ubok-dong is like and how to visit it. Even now, there are many places in Songnisan Mountain that claim to be the real Ubok-dong. In this article, it is assumed that Yongyu-dong, Hwabuk-myeon, Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, was actually Ubok-dong and decided to develop the story. First, until the 18th century, this area was dominated by the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism. There is now a substantial temple site left. In the 18th century, Song Jun-gil's descendants lived in seclusion. Assuming Song Joon-gil and his descendants' influence as intellectuals in the late Joseon Dynasty, it can be seen that this area was an important area that influenced the entire inside and outside Songnisan Mountain. However, when the Song family left here, Yongyu-dong became devastated. In such a situation, in the 19th century, a story about Ubok-dong centered on this place suddenly appears. Lee Kyu-kyung, who lived in Chungju in the 1830s, is writing a series of articles that convey such phenomena in great detail. Prior to that, Jeong Yak-yong is making a fairly long time to focus on studying without being fooled by absurd stories such as Ubok-dong. Considering the status of the two people in the knowledge world of the time, it can be seen that the phenomenon of Ubok-dong at the time was very serious. In this article, I first examined the details of the stories related to Ubok-dong, focusing on the records of Jeong Yak-yong and Lee Kyu-kyung. It then examined how the ideology of Bokjidongcheon and the ideology of enlightenment, which were rampant ahead of the fall of the dynasty in the 19th century, had a relationship with the story of Ubok-dong. The story of Ubok-dong is especially important because the people of the time believed that it was not just a story, but a fact.
