Abstract
In Korean history, iron Buddha is a type of Buddhist statue created over a short period from the late Unified Silla period to the early Goryeo period. Among the iron Buddhas excavated from Hakseong-dong, Wonju, Gangwon-do, the main 1972, 1973, and 1976 iron seated Buddhas have similar casting division lines, so it is possible that they were made in the same workshop and using the same method. The main 1970 statue does not have a casting division line, so it is possible that it was made using a different method. To confirm this, a physical and chemical analysis was conducted. There appears to be no specific tendency according to the excavation location under a microscope, and the porosity analysis results using image analysis also showed a constant value regardless of the excavation location. The results of the composition mineral analysis confirmed specific elements according to the excavation location, but it should be noted that only the inner soil layer was pulverized during the preprocessing process. The results of the correlation analysis using the contents of major and trace elements showed that the main 1970, 1972, and 1973 had high correlations, while the main 1976 had low correlations. In conclusion, contrary to initial expectations, the main 1970 statue and the remaining statues did not show any material differences, and overall, there appears to be no significant difference in the composition of the layers and the manufacturing method. Since the research results were obtained without accurately identifying the sample collection location or original shape, additional research seems necessary.
