Abstract

This study empirically investigates the mediating effects of intrinsic motivation on the relationship between supportive leadership and innovative behavior, and between perceived organizational support and innovative behavior, based on the analysis of the data from 213 employees and their supervisors in 11 firms. Findings show that supportive leadership is positively associated with innovative behavior, and perceived organizational support is positively associated with innovative behavior. Intrinsic motivation has also a significant impact on innovative behavior. Furthermore, intrinsic motivation has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between supportive leadership and innovative behavior, and fully mediates the relationship between perceived organizational support and innovative behavior. Overall, these patterns suggests that supportive leadership has both direct and indirect effects on innovative behaviors of employees, and perceived organizational support has only indirect effect on innovative behaviors through followers' intrinsic motivation. Implications of the research findings are discussed, and recommendation for future research are provided.
