Abstract
This study analyzed the relationship between appropriation strategy and openness in innovation process. Chesbrough(2003), suggested the concept of open innovation, pointed decline of appropriability as a major factor which lead the transition from traditional closed-innovation paradigm to open innovation paradigm. However, because firms, intend to conduct open innovation strategy, concerned about the disclosure of information, they endeavor to protect innovation outcome by utilizing available means of appropriability. This study investigated the relation between the strength of the formal/informal appropriation strategies and openness of innovation strategies(external collaboration/external knowledge source). The results show that appropriability strategy have a positive relationship with breadth of external collaboration. However, breadth of external search have a positive relationship with only formal appropriation strategy. The contribution of this study is as follows. This study helped to raise the understanding level of the open innovation by explaining the difference in the openness of the innovation process in terms of the limitation factor, concerns about leakages. Second, there is an empirical contribution in terms of analyzing domestic SME data, which has been relatively less studied.
