Abstract
The purpose of this study is to see the achievements and limits ofThe Historical picture books in Korea, under the influences ofnationalism. Nationalism means here the power to keep self-identity byconcealing or reducing various class or sexual contradictions in oursociety, or the power to keep exclusive posture by reviving othergroups as a subjective identity standing for ‘evil.’ 『Flower Grandma』reports the Military Sexual Slavery by Japan as anational crime, which is not instigating but a lot abstained. Dealing with the issue of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, 『FlowerGrandma』criticized war and violence from the views of women overthe relation between Korea and Japan, while bringing us theopportunities to introspect violence in our society. However, whiteshirts and black skirts on the flower grandmas were problematic, sincethat coincides with the school uniform of so-named modern girls whoexclusively exhibited specialty of their class. This can be troublesome from the aspects of historical research ortypical characters, and even dangerous in that it may remove the aspectof ‘class’ in the issue of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan. In additionto that, uniformed white shirt and black skirts on the 17 Military SexualSlavery by Japan in the work can also be problematic. Uniformity ofMilitary Sexual Slavery by Japan group may compel differentexperiences of the individuals into the same one. If 『Flower Grandma』could give life to the testimony out ofnationalism in the picture books, it would have been able to establishthe base to unite with others in Japan, who display vigilance onnationalism. Gyebaek and Gwanchang in 『Gyebaek Bangul Gwanchang』reveals the emotions of sorrow and fear, which is different from theimages of other heroes. However, seeing the pictures’ angles and textdescriptions, it still coincide with manly heroes. The fact that thevoices of general Gyebaek’s wife and children as well as namelesssoldiers in the war place were removed is also problematic. In the naming ‘a great hero of Baekje,’ men is positioned prominentbeing distinguished from women, while different individuals areintegrated into a group with its identity held back where variousdifferences and conflicts are often ignored. Introspective questionsabout war itself is suppressed. Gwanchang forgives his father right before his death and the nationcalls for Gwanchang’s name; where we can see the author’s desire tore-organize Gwanchang as a real, national male hero who is going tostay long in the history.
