Abstract

In this study I have examined the tendency of visual representation of pictorial articles regarding Korea(Joseon) and Japan and its’ people published in the Diashizhai huabao(1884-1898). First of all, by examining the distribution of themes, I have discussed the general tendency of representation of the two nations in the pictorial newspaper. Following, I have analyzed the representative images in terms of visual translation of lingual texts and discussed shift of meanings and what caused them. In terms of distribution of themes, both Korea and Japan were objects of attention because of major political concerns. Percentage of articles regarding wars and politics were 8 to 10 times higher than what Nanny Kim’s representative samples show. However, reports on bizarre affairs and things maintained the ratio that Kim’s samples show. Looking into the details of picture reports on Korea and Japan which fall into the category of “War and Politics”, we can see that due to strong desire of producers and publishers of this media to visualize the hierarchies of the Sinocentric East Asian world order, facts are exaggerated and distorted in the process of visualization beyond what the lingual text tells. More importantly, due to yet stronger desire to visualize the Japanese as a common foe of China and Korea, and as a losing Other, ironically the media fails to visualize Japan as a hostile and cruel nation that the texts tell of or presuppose, picturing them as a feeble and poor beings bound to perish.
