초록

This study examined numerically the spatial characteristics of the wind resource in Jeju Island using Computational fluidDynamics (CFD). The initial conditions for the numerical simulation were set to varying wind speeds (3, 5, 13 and 25 [m/s]), whichcorresponded to wind speeds between the cut-in and cut-out for wind turbine operations, and 12 different wind directions. The resultshows that the normalized velocity decreases with height, having similar values between 500 m and 1100 m. The normalized velocityalso tended to increase at altitudes higher than 1100 m. The blocking effect by Mt.Halla located on the center of Jeju Island generatesa massive wake. The wind speed deficits by the wake effects have a large influence on the lee side of Mt.Halla up to more than 10 km. Overall, the averaged values of normalized velocity and turbulence intensity lie in the range, 0.73~0.77 and 0.078~0.083, respectively. Four regions (Eoseoungsaengak, Seongneol, Keunnokkome and Sanbangsan) with severe wind speed reductions were found, andshowed 70%, 55%, 50% and 50% wind speed reductions, respectively.
