Bio-diesel is one of most effective alternative energies developed as a solution to the problem of fossil fuel depletion andclimate change. The first generation bio-diesel was produced via trans-esterification. However, the oxygenated compounds within thefirst generation bio-diesel result in problems such as thermal instability, corrosiveness, and a low heating value. To overcome theseproblems, a deoxygenation process has been developed to remove the oxygenated compounds and produce the second generationbio-diesel. In this study, a series of Ni-Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalysts with different Ni loadings (5, 10, 20, 30 wt.%) were applied for thedeoxygenation of oleic acid. The 20 wt.% Ni-Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst exhibited the highest oleic acid conversion, as well as the highestselectivity for C9 ~ C17 compounds. This is mainly due to its having the highest BET surface area, easiest reducibility, and highestacidity.
