Abstract
Laws and practices that exclude immigrants stem from the fact that the presence of strangers, or others, influences national identity and national culture. However, national culture or identity is neither constant nor self-sufficient. Rather, it goes through several processes that are continuously evolving. In other words, these are merely conceptual links of historical and constitutive values and ideas. The present moment in constant change therefore always challenges established concepts and legitimacy. And because the past can be more easily recalled as an example for the purpose of advancing, it becomes an easy way to access authority or legitimacy. In this way, the past is an aesthetic refuge for those who resist the new cultural change. The migration literature discussed in this thesis regards italianità as a great unity, and this identity is constructed within the discourse, not outside it. Identification as a construction shows that it is a never-completed, always 'in-progress' process. This is what the Italian migration literature presented in this paper is trying to show by providing visibility into the hidden racial exclusion, ambiguous historical and colonial memories, and the invisible spatial assumption that contributed to the construction of italianità. For these artists, making this process public is the way into it. To show how an identity is constructed is to assert its place in that composition. By writing literature, that is to say, by engaging in the traditional medium of the construction of Italian identity. Each of these writers demonstrates that immigrants are not simply others treated exclusively in defining traditional Italianity, and that their work is not documented on the basis of mainstream discourse about identity.
