Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of calculation methods using Braille on addition and subtraction skills of the elementary level blind students. The method of the experiment was to use abacus calculation on addition and subtraction for pre-test, and then to compare it with braille calculation for post-test, which was done after one month practice. The subjects of the current study were 12 students with blindness in elementary level, and their ages ranged from 9 to 13. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, the subjects in post-test showed better scores in accuracy than the subjects of the control group. Secondly, the subjects in post- test showed better scores in speed than the subjects of the control group. Thirdly, the subjects in lower grade students showed more improvement in the accuracy and speed scores compared with higher graders. The last, the subjects in higher grades gained no scores in exactness and speed in calculation more than the lower grade subjects. But they gained significantly speed scores in calculation test. In conclusion, the calculation method using Braille was more successful than the other abacus calculation method in testing accuracy and speed. It would be very helpful for both teachers and blind students to use more effective calculation method in learning addition and subtraction skills.
