Abstract

An Aspect of Low Recognition toward Korean Traditional Music in the Early 20th Century Shin Sŏng-ung The modern history of Korean music is distinguished by the appearance of SP discs (78 rpm) and radio broadcasting. SP discs and radio broadcasting exerted a significant influence in expanding the general appreciation of music in the modern society of Korea. The purpose of this paper is to investigate an aspect of low recognition toward Korean traditional music by commoners in the early 20th century. This paper covers four topics: 1. Introduction, 2. Musical Condition of the Early 20th Century, 3. A Factor of Low Recognition toward Korean Traditional Music, 4. Conclusion. After an investigation of relevant primary sources, it is pointed out in conclusion that Korean young generations had to be educated by the Western music programs at modern schools, and Korean traditional music could not be thought in these modern educational institutions. Expect for Korean court music, the most Korean traditional including folk song and music, therefore, were mainly transmitted and performed by folk musicians or female entertainers known as kisaeng 妓生 in private kwŏnbŏn 券番, i.e. professional kisaeng institution during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). This fact is the basic reason why commoners could not highly recognized Korean traditional music in comparison with Western music at that time.
