Abstract
These photographs introduced in this dissertation, found in UK, are presumed the very firstpictures that recorded the feature of koreans as known so far. Photographs of civilized peoplein 1870's were well known, however, there have been lots of ass umptions that pictures ofkorean people already existed through the contact with Westerne r in 1860's. But this study hasthe meaning of discovering material which proves clearly that t true. Lee Hang-Uk, relative of Lee Ui-Ik who was a Representat ive of CongratulatoryMission went to Beijing following the envoy in 1862 and remaine d an account of his trip -Yunhaeng Report. This record is significant in aspect that a term of Sajin(寫眞, P hotography) was first usedbesides it was the first picture taken by korean. As a matter o f fact, the assumption that theterm of Sajin came through Japan unveiled as a false and It was made clear that Sajin wasthe product of our tradition and the recognition of the world b y Lee Hang-Uk, the reporter ofYunhaeg Report applying the experience of producing the photogr aphs by himself. Thissubstantiates that the course of acception of Sajin was not as a passive subject but the activeway before it was introduced officially in Korea. On the other hand, This proves that Chosun, the dynasty under t he policy of isolation, keptities in Beijing and partlyrecognized the current of the world.
