Abstract

Xixia(1038-1227) founded by Tankut was an ardent Buddhist kingdom and boasted its prosperous Buddhism culture. There are a lot of remaining Buddhist paintings in the caves of Dunhuang and from Khara Khoto ruins. Water-Moon Avalokitesvara is one of the most significant subjects of the Buddhist paintings. The paintings were painted on the wall of the main hall for the first time at the Dunhuang grottos in the Xixia period. We assume the belief in Water-Moon Avalokitesvara was more popular at that time. The purpose of this article is to examine the characteristics and background of the iconographies of the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara paintings produced in the Xixia kingdom. Avalokitesvara holds a copy of sutra or a rosary in his hand as an attribute. Holding a rosary is common, especially to white-robed Avalokitesvara. But holding a sutra on the other hand is very unusual. It's hard to find the other examples except for the Mr. Ma's Wife Kuan-yin holding a scroll of sutra. A copy of sutra is originally attributed to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Avalokitesvara and Samantabhadra holding the same object on the Xixia Buddhist paintings tells us very significant point. There is a strong likelihood that the ruling class of Xixia, that is, high ranking patrons regarded two bodhisattvas as the same. Such an assumption is supported by the placing much importance to the Avatamsaka Sutra(華嚴經) in Xixia. The Avalokitesvara belief of the sutra is different from the belief based on the chapter on Avalokitesvara in the Lotus Sutra(法華經普門品). The bodhisattva practice, namely seeking the ultimate truth and salvation of others, is emphasized in the writings on Avalokitesvara. Samantabhadra also preaches about the practices to be enlightened in the last chapter of the forty-volume version of Avatamsaka Sutra(普賢行願品). From this fact, we know the reason why Avalokitesvara holds the Samantabhadra's attribute. It symbolizes the bodhisattva practice. The waning crescent-shaped moon depicted at the top of the painting is also concerned with the writings of the Avatamsaka Sutra. It symbolizes the means of Buddha teaching the law of the impermanence with its changes in the shape. In addition, it can be interpreted as the bodhisattva practice. In other words, he changes the means of saving according to the suffering beings. In reality the crescent moon appears on the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara paintings of Uighur prior to Xixia in the same Dunhuang area. Hence we can see they adopted the moon iconography and transfigured it. We often encounter the pilgrims and donor figures on the works of Xixia. Their appearance on the paintings is a kind of tradition at Dunhuang. But the priest Xuanzang(玄奘法師) in company with his attendant and the donor party on a cloud attached with a long curving tail are never seen before. It indicates that the devotion of pilgrimage to the sacred place is stronger in Xixia kingdom. The Water-Moon Avalokitesvara paintings of Xixia represents the deity of Mt. Potalaka in West regions instead of Mt. Putuo, the Chinese abode, even though the form and iconographies of the painting are under the influence of Northern Song. Therefore the desire of visiting the holy abode in the far distance is represented on the painting. In other words, both iconography of Xuanzang and the specific shape of cloud certify the holy site as Mt. Potalaka described in the Avatamsaka Sutra. There is another painting that shows us the influence of Avatamsaka Sutra. The representation of the Tankuts dancing and playing the musie is very unique. They seem to farewell the soul of old man on a cloud, possibly the emperor of Xixia. The shape of the cloud with a long curving tail demonstrates that he has just arrived here, and he is burning incense right in front of Avalokitesvara. In these respects, I believe that he is reborn in the Pure Land of Avalokitesvara not that of Amitabha. Rebirth in the Avalokitesvara Pure Land(觀音淨土往生) is preached in the verse of Avalokitesvara in the forty-volume version. There the believers can exercise Bodhisattva practice with the deity's help. It is a compassionate means of Avalokitesvara for their enlightenment. The belief circulated a lot through the Kamakura period in Japan by the promotion of the monk Jyokei(貞慶). I have suggested that Water-Moon Avalokitesvara paintings of Goryeo bear the belief, too. It is interesting to find the evidence of the belief that also spread in Xixia. Finally, it should be noted that the motifs, shrivatsa and chakra are found on the Amitabha Buddha's body. They have been pointed out as a feature of Goryeo Buddhist paintings with a textual source based on the Avatamsaka Sutra. This also reveals the close relationship between Xixia Buddhist paintings and Hwaeom thought. I hope further investigation will be done on the influence of the Avatamsaka Sutra as I mentioned above regarding the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara paintings of Xixia.
