이 논문은 19세기-20세기 초 서유럽을 중심으로 자본주의적 근대가 발현한 새로운 공공성의 한 형식인 셀러브리티 문화에 주목하고, 그것이 20세기 초 한국의 역사적 맥락에서 발현되는 양상을 탐색하는 작업이다. 논의의 초점은 전통 예인으로서의 축적된 자산을 기반으로 1900년대 초부터 극장 무대에서 다재다능한 예능인의 역할을 수행하면서 대중적 인지도를 넓혀갔던 기생을 근대적 의미의 여성 셀러브리티의 원형으로 보고 기생의 공적 재현의 변모와 특수한 입지를 검토하는 것이다. 특히 음반, 방송과 같은 근대적 기술 매체가 활성화되었던 1920년대 후반 이후 대중예술의 장에서 기생들이 명창과 대중 유행가수 등으로 분화되는 지점을 살피고 음반 발매를 통해 대중성을 확장해 갔던 유행가수의 사례를 통해 관객 또는 팬들과 친밀성의 관계에 기반한 셀러브리티의 형상을 가시화한다. 또한, 제국과 식민지 간의 비대칭적 구도와 파시즘의 심화 속에서 음반산업이 호황기를 맞았던 1930년대 중후반의 사회정치적 상황을 배경으로 식민지 도시 극장에서 새로운 유형의 오락 및 예술을 제공한 “대중연예” 무대의 구성을 살펴보고, 다양한 레퍼토리를 수행하며 대중연예 공연의 주축이 되었던 기생의 위치를 탐색한다. 이 연구는 근대 시기 기생을 통해 여성 셀러브리티의 역사적 형상을 탐색할 뿐 아니라 당대 극장 무대에서 셀러브리티와 관객 사이에 이루어진 친밀감과 정동의 장을 심문함으로써 식민지 시기 공공성 내부의 이질성과 다층성에 접근하는 새로운 계기를 마련할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
This article focuses on celebrity culture, which developed as a particular form of the public sphere stemming from capitalist modernity in Western Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, and examines its manifestation in Korean history in the early 20th century. On the premise that kisaeng is a prototype of a female celebrity in the Korean context, this article focuses on the variations in public representations and specificity of kisaeng, who have enlarged their public visibility by performing the roles of versatile performers on modern theater stages since the early 1900s on the basis of the accumulated assets of traditional artists inherited from the premodern period. In particular, this article looks into the diversification of kisaeng into two types of celebrities, female master singers of traditional genres and modern popular singers, and makes visible the configuration of celebrity based on the intimate relationship between kisaeng popular singers and their fans as consumers of albums or audiences of stage performances. Furthermore, this article demonstrates the position of kisaeng in stages of “popular entertainment,” which provided a new form of amusement and artistic performances to the audiences in colonial cities against the societal and political background of the latter parts of 1930s’ Korea, when the record industry reached its apex in tandem with the intensification of fascism in the asymmetric relation between empire and colony. This study aims to create a new way to investigate the heterogeneous and multitudinous layers of colonial Korea's public sphere by looking into the historical figures of female celebrities through kisaeng and scrutinizing the site of intimacy and affects composed between celebrity and audience on theater stages.
