Abstract

It has been continually pointed out to date that the identification of giftedness in the field of Korean traditional performing arts, including Korean traditional music, is bound to be different from that in Western music. In reality, however, the criteria for discerning gifted Korean traditional musicians remain in the determination of ‘musical achievement of traditional music elements’. This study draws attention to the rather contradicting facts, whereby the gifted education system in the field of Korean traditional music mainly emphasizes ‘musical ability’ and the statement that ‘gifted people in the field of Korean traditional music differ from generally gifted people in the field of music.’ It is necessary to go beyond the custom of thinking where giftedness in Korean traditional music is a mere specialized sub-area of musical giftedness and re-establish giftedness in Korean traditional music as an independent area of artistic value. An approach to giftedness that focuses on musical achievement for characteristics considered to be elements of Korean traditional music poses its limitations. Additionally, gifted education for Korean traditional music should not be treated as a way to become a winner in the competitive world of art.. Let us reflect once again who the gifted Korean traditional musicians of today are.
