Abstract

Waterfronts of port cities are vulnerable to natural disasters. Traditional hard infrastructure solutions are becoming less effective due to the increasing frequency and intensity of climate change-induced disasters, and they often result in environmental and aesthetic issues. In this research, we propose a holistic approach that utilizes soft engineering infrastructure—natural or nature-mimicking structures—that addresses disaster prevention while considering environmental, social, and economic factors. This approach aims to create sustainable and resilient waterfront spaces that serve as both living areas and disaster buffers. This study analyzes international cases that employ soft engineering infrastructure to derive planning guidelines and proposes a soft engineering infrastructure plan for the waterfront of Busan South Port based on these findings, which will serve as a foundation for the future redevelopment plan of Busan South Port.
