본 연구는 한국과 일본에서 이루어진 조선통신사 전시의 역사와 전개 양상을 학술적으로 검토하여 그 성격과 의미를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 1985년 한일 국교 정상화 20주년을 기념해 국립도쿄박물관과 국립중앙박물관이 공동 개최한 특별전을 기점으로, 2025년 한일 국교 정상화 60주년을 맞아 서울역사박물관에서 열린 특별전에 이르기까지 약 40여 년간 양국에서 개최된 통신사 관련 전시를 분석 대상으로 삼아, 시기별 전개 양상과 특징을 살펴본다. 이를 바탕으로 통신사 전시가 자료 발굴과 학술 연구, 대중 교육과의 연계성 속에서 어떻게 이루어져 왔는지, 전시 기획 주체와 접근 방식, 전시 서사의 변화 속에서 드러나는 전시의 성격과 의미를 고찰하고, 나아가 향후 조선통신사 전시의 발전 방향과 관련 연구의 확장 가능성을 논의한다.
Abstract
This study examines the history and development of exhibitions on the Joseon Envoys to Japan in both Korea and Japan. It analyzes exhibitions held between 1985 and 2025, from the landmark joint exhibition co-organized by the Tokyo National Museum (1985) and the National Museum of Korea (1986) to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the normalization of Korea–Japan diplomatic relations, to the special exhibition held at the Seoul Museum of History in 2025 marking the sixtieth anniversary. By examining key characteristics and trajectories across different periods, this study explores how changes in exhibition narratives, spatial composition, display media, and curatorial strategies have reshaped the meanings and roles of Joseon Envoy exhibitions in each country. It further discusses the significance of these exhibitions as sites where historical memory and contemporary interpretations intersect, and considers directions for future exhibitions and related research.
