Abstract

The major strand of research on early childhood multicultural education in Korea highlights integration of multicultural education into the themes of social development proposed in current national kindergarten curriculum. The lack of a multicultral environment in Korean society, however, prevents children from having a rich multicultural experience in real life. As a result, multicultural activity in the classroom can not make much of an impact on the attitude of Korean children toward cultural diversity and people of different races and ethnicity. In this study, museum exhibitions that display a wide range of vivid cultural materials for children are suggested as alternatives to enrich children's multicultural experience. A semi-structured interview with a kindergarten teacher provides an explanatory description of how children developed a positive attitude toward people of different races and cultures when they were engaged in art activity and role play after visiting the Jejudo Africa Museum Further semi-structured interviews with a curator and educators at the Africa Museum reveal the origin of bias and distorted knowledge about the Continent of Africa that has enabled people to develop a worldview which divides the world into the civilized and the savage. The educational goal of the Africa Museum is focused on understanding diversity and idiosyncrasy of the Continent of Africa as a way of disabusing Koreans of the negative cultural assumptions embedded in the prevalent distorted knowledge about the Continent of Africa.. This study suggests that local-level early childhood curriculum should be transformed to meet the specific needs of each local community, and that community resources, such as museum exhibitions and public education, need to collaborate in order to offer children authentic multicultural experiences which school alone cannot provide.
