Abstract

Longitudinal relations between infants' joint attention and preschoolers' development were examined in 24 children. Two aspects of joint attention-initiating joint attention(IJA) and responding to joint attention(RJA)-were observed by the Early Social Communication Scale at 12, 15, and 18 months. The children's comprehensive and expressive vocabularies and social competence were evaluated at 36 months. The children's understanding of mind was evaluated with 4 different tasks at 48 months. The infants' joint attention displayed significant correlations with preschoolers' vocabulary, social competence and understanding of mind. Infants who responded more to the tester's initiating joint attention at 12 months comprehended more words at 36 months. Infants who initiated more joint attention to the tester at 15 months displayed less externalizing behaviors at 36 months and understood others’ minds better at 48 months.
