Abstract

This study was undertaken to develop a toddler-parent program based on current brain development theory. The initial goals of the program were to help toddlers to grow better as their brains develop and to strengthen interactions between mother and a child. The program’s development can be summarized in terms of the process steps. The first step, setting the direction of the program, involved studying and reviewing the literature on theoretical considerations regarding the development tasks of toddlers and brain-based education fundamentals. The second multi-layered step required consultation with experts in brain science and toddler education and encompassed making out a tentative plan for the goal and contents of the program, developing teaching strategies, and mapping out how the program would operate. In the third step, based on the tentative plan, pre-program activities were drawn up after discussion with experts on toddler activities, and pre-tested with 20 toddlers whose performances were observed and evaluated. In the fourth step, the final toddler-parent program model was completed by modifying and supplementing the pre-program in light of its extensive evaluation results. This article discusses each step in detail and discusses the educational significance of the program and its implications.
