초록
The argument developed in this paper is to examine the use of language in the dramatic context and its relation to the social context. The paper develops the argument using Lefebvre’s explication of what trivial or everyday signifies. The paper examines the relation and the signification of how dramatic language is used to make the fictional world resemble reality itself in the works of Beckett, Ionesco, O’Neill and Pinter. The paper also delves into the difference between the avant-garde theatres of Europe and Anglo-Saxon society. While the European theatres tend to rely on ‘pause’ and ‘silence’or on the actual sound of the language itself the Anglo-Saxon theatres rely more on the situation and the signification of the language used in the theatre. The denotative and connotative functions and features of language is brought into question to actuallyhow and why the dramatic language on stage is changing to express the social changes and the corresponding social reality thus making the drama seem more real to the audience.
