북미불교에서 보조 지눌에 대한 인식과 이해

초록

불일보조국사(佛日普照國師) 지눌(知訥, 1158-1210)은 북미 불교학의 한국불교 연구 분야에서 원효(元曉, 617-686)와 함께 큰 비중을 차지하는 인물 중 한 사람이다. 『권수정혜결사문(勸修定慧結社文)』을 비롯한 지눌의 저술이 영역되어 출판되었고, 그의 사상에 대해 박성배, 길희성, 강건기, 심재룡, 로버트 버스웰, 피터 그레고리, 로버트 지멜로, 로날드 다진카, 토마스 클리어리, 박진영, 성원 등이 연구하였다. 본고에서는 이와 같은 북미지역에서 이루어진 지눌에 대한 저술과 논문을 통해 북미연구자들이 지눌을 어떻게 이해하는지 고찰하였다. 우선 지눌에 대한 북미학자들의 평가를 살펴보았다. 첫째로 지눌은 중국에서 수학하지 않은 한국의 독자적 불교 전통을 형성한 인물이다. 둘째로 그는 선불교를 포함한 한국 불교 전통의 정점에 위치하고 있다. 셋째로 지눌의 돈오점수(頓悟漸修)의 수증론은 한국불교의 핵심 중 하나가 된다. 넷째로 그의 사상적 특징은 정혜쌍수(定慧雙修)로 표현되는 선과 교의 통합에 있다. 다음으로 지눌의 저술에 대한 북미연구자들의 해석을 『법집별행록절요병입사기(法集別行錄節要幷入私記)』(이하 『절요』로 약칭)를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 왜냐하면 북미불교학에서 지눌에 대해 많은 연구성과를 낸 박성배와 로버트 버스웰의 견해에 차이가 있었기 때문이다. 박성배는 『절요』가 단순히 종밀의 방대한 책을 간추린 것이므로, 어디까지나 ‘절요’일 뿐이라고 말한다. 반면에 로버트 버스웰은 『절요』를 모든 동아시아 불교문헌 전통에서 가장 완벽하고 통찰력 있는 것 중 하나로 보았다. 마지막으로 지눌이 후대에 미친 영향을, 북미를 제외한 다른 지역의 불교학 영역과 다른 학문분야로 나누어 검토하였다. 이와 같이 북미학자들의 연구를 통해 지눌의 사상이 성리학 등의 동양철학과 신학을 포함한 서양철학과 만나게 되면서, ‘한반도’와 ‘고려’라는 지형적이고 시대적인 경계를 벗어나 지눌의 사상에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히게 되는 계기를 마련하게 되었다고 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

The research on Jinul (知訥, 1158-1210) is a big part of the field of the Korean Buddhist study in North America. The books written by Jinul were translated into English. Then the thought of Jinul was studied by many scholars: Sung-bae Park, Hee-sung Keel, Kun-ki Kang, Jae-ryong Shim, Buswell E. Robert Jr., Peter N. Gregory, Robert M. Gimello, Ronald J. Daziwnka, Thomas F. Cleary, Jin Y. Park, Chan-ju Mun and so on. Through their writings on Jinul in North America, this study examines how researchers of this area understand Jinul. First, I considered scholarly evaluation of Jinul. Second, I introduce the representative understanding by the scholars who study Jinul in North America, especially focusing on the Excerpts from the "Dharma Collection and Special Practice Record" with Inserted Personal Notes (法集別行錄節要幷入私記). Third, I treat the influence of the studies on Jinul of the North America. It makes the understanding of the Jinul's thought to be broaden and deepen.
