Abstract

This paper attempts to explore prenatal education known as ‘Taegyo (胎敎)’ in Korea from the perspective of the Early Buddhism and to establish Early Buddhist theory of parental education. The laws of action and reaction and the law of attraction, common cores underlying Karma and rebirth suggest that an individual is likely to be born into a family, parents, and growth environment appropriate for his or her own karma in his or her previous lives. Thus prenatal education should be started the fertile periodEarly Buddhism regards the new conceptus as not just a potential person evolving for the first time from nothing, but as a continuous entity bearing the completed karmic encoding of a recently deceased individual. This suggests that fetus should be respected as an independent individual. For this reason, Early Buddhism emphasizes the importance of mutual relationship and reciprocal communication between parents and infants through the four stages of child-bearing. Parents should prepare a conception for a being who has karmic tendencies which cause it to be born as their child. They influence unborn and new-born babies mentally and physically, by performing merits (puñña), keeping the precepts, purifying the mind with mindfulness (sati), and going for three-fold refuge (ti-sarana). As can be seen in the case of the Bodhisattva, infants also actively influence their parents as independent individuals. From an early Buddhist point of view, prenatal education is not confined to the during the period of pregnancy. As the Buddha divided the stages of childbearing into four: the fertile period, pregnancy, birth, and nursing, and as can be seen in Anāthapiṇḍika’s remarks on prenatal education, prenatal education is a holisitc education that must not only conducted before and after a moment of pregnancy, but also be continued even after birth.
