Abstract
This thesis examines emptiness (śūnyatā) in the Mūlamadhya makakārikā (MMK). Specifically, it refers not only to Candrakīr ti’s commentary Prasannapadā (PP) but also to other verses of the 24th chapter and to various chapters of the MMK, in order to clarify “the purpose of emptiness (śūnyatā prayojana)”, “empti ness (śūnyatā)”, and “the meaning of emptiness (śūnyatārtha)” m entioned in the 7th verse of that chapter. Emptiness, as can be seen from MMK 24:1-7 and MMK 13:1-4, is neither being (bhāva), which possesses the inherent nature of existence, nor non-being (abhāva), which possesses the inherent nature of non-existence; it is the non-inherent nature (niḥsvabhāvatv a), the characteristic that makes transformation possible. The meaning of emptiness, as can be seen from MMK 24:18, becomes clearly manifest within the equivalence relation “depen dent co-arising (pratītyasamutpāda) = emptiness = temporary designation (prajñapti) = the middle way (madhyamā pratipa d),” which is established on the basis of “non-inherent nature,” that is, “not arising while possessing inherent nature.” At this point, the meaning of emptiness is identical with the meaning of dependent co-arising (the mutual dependence of causes and conditions and the arising of things as their result), temporary designation (the designation of emptiness that depends on its o wn constituents), and the middle way (emptiness in which there is neither the inherent nature of existence nor the inherent nat ure of non-existence). Finally, the purpose of emptiness, as can be seen from MMK 18:1-5, can be understood in relation to the twelve links (dvādaśāṅga pratītyasamutpāda). In connection with both the structure of the state conditioned by deluded mind (pravṛtti mārga) and the state conditioned by true mind (nivṛtti mārga) of the twelve links, the purpose of emptines is the “cessation of conceptual proliferations (prapañca),” the “extinction of discriminations (vikalpa),” the “ext inction of karma (karman) and afflictions (kleśa),” and “liberation (mokṣa),” namely the “accomplishment of the state conditioned by true mind of the twelve links.” As discussed above, when the purpose of emptiness, emptiness, and the meaning of emptiness are interpreted not only in connec tion with the commentary but also organically with various chap ters of the MMK, their significance becomes all the more clear.
