Abstract
This study aimed to develop and validate an educational program designed to enhance self-empathy in at-risk adolescents who have experienced psychological trauma. Through literature review and needs analysis, the core components of self-empathy were identified and structured as self-awareness, self-prizing, and self-soothing. Self-empathy functions as a key emotional regulation mechanism that offers internal emotional support, facilitates acceptance of negative emotions, reduces stress, and enhances adolescents' self-efficacy. First, the educational content of the program was derived using Borich needs assessment and the Locus for Focus model. The analysis revealed that self-feeling, self-soothing, self-affirmation, and self-value were the most urgently required competencies. Secondary priorities included self-goal setting, self-belief, self-defense, self-acceptance, self-affection, and self-reassurance. Based on these findings, the program was designed to integrate components of social-emotional competence and resilience, comprising four modules—emotional harmony, meaning in life, recovery strength, and self-support—across ten sessions. The 'Emotional Harmony' module fosters the ability to clearly recognize one’s emotions and thoughts and maintain internal st29ability. The 'Meaning in Life' module guides youth in exploring their values and life goals to build a positive self-concept. The 'Recovery Strength' module enhances resilience following trauma, while the 'Self-Support' module strengthens the capacity for self-encouragement in challenging situations. Second, the validity and applicability of the developed program were confirmed through expert content validation and field-based formative evaluation. Participants expressed positive responses, suggesting that the program effectively improved self-empathy and emotional stability. In particular, self-feeling, self-soothing, self-affirmation, and self-value were identified as core competencies essential to psychological recovery and personal growth. This study demonstrates the educational validity and practical value of a self-empathy-based intervention for at-risk adolescents.
