Abstract

This is a study about John Steinbeck’s “philosophical travelogue”, Travels with Charley in Search of America(1962), which documents the road trip he took with his french poodle Charley around the United States in 1960. He wrote that he was moved by a desire to see his country on a personal level. He had many questions going into his journey, the main one being “What are Americans like today”. However, he found that the “new America” did not live up to his expectations. While Steinbeck assessed America and Americans, he also revealed himself candidly, confirming some of the images of him. Through this study, what I discover is Steinbeck as a humble man, a fair, modest man who perceived his own limitations, as a man with a sense of childish wonder who was determined to discover his world, as a man who had to learn to transcend the past and to go on into the unknown future with anxiety, resignation, or courage, as a man who attempted to be an objective reporter as well as a subjective commentator, as a patriot and a critic of American culture with an ecologically enlightened prophetic voice, stressing the supreme importance of preserving man’s oneness with nature and moral fortitude in the nation, and as a man who loved his country so much that he had to criticize as a moralist its woeful faults. To sum up, this work exemplifies both Steinbeck’s candid, critical but affectionate assessment of America and Americans and his moral crusade against the defects of his nation. Therefore in this study I revealed Steinbeck as an endearing humanist and as a candid prophetic voice for America’s turbulent but challenging future.
