Abstract
Since the role of foreign subsidiaries in the multinational enterprises emerges, autonomy and performance of subsidiaries have attracted interests in the international business area. However, compared to the studies in organization theories, we do not have much research on this issue, especially on the subsidiary performance rather than the perrformance of a whole enterprise. This study investigated on the relationship between subsidiary autonomy and performance, interacted by the effects of cultural differences and job interdependence, using 142 foreign subsidiaries data in Korea. We found that subsidiary autonomy indeed has a significant impact on subsidiary performance, and the positive relationship is not only strengthened by large cultural distance but also weakened by interdependence between headquarter and subsidiary. This result suggests that it would be recommended for multinational enterprises to give much autonomy to foreign subsidiaries in general, but the impact depends on external conditions (e.g. national culture) and internal conditions (e.g. job interdependence) as well.
