Abstract

Using a data set of FDIs by South Korean MNEs between 2007 and 2016, this paper examined the impact of agglomeration of Korean companies at the industry level on subsidiary mortality of Korean foreign subsidiaries. Based on Cox's proportional hazard regression analysis, we find a negative relationship between the agglomeration and subsidiary exit rates. We also find that while international experience negatively moderates the relationship between the agglomeration and subsidiary exit rates, cluster turnover positively moderates the relationship. We conclude industry-specific Korean agglomeration plays an important role in mitigating subsidiary mortality in host countries.
