Abstract
This thesis explains the origin and development of the philosophy of action, which is described in the second part of Hegel's Philosophy of Right. First, it explains through what process the meaning of morality has changed. In the 1st edition of the Encyclopedia of 1817, the Morality was designed as a critical review of the Kantian moral philosophy, but in the three subsequent lectures on the philosophy of Right, Hegel added a great deal of discussion on the philosophy of action. It could be said that Hegel's redefinition of the meaning of morality reflects the change in the composition of this work. Second, Hegel's philosophy of action has already been established in the Phenomenology of Spirit. What a specific action is, i.e. the meaning of the action is not defined by the individual agents, but the actor must accept the socially defined meaning. Third, from around 1810, Hegel took a modern position that action and deed is separated and that the responsibility of actors should be limited to action. However, this position is difficult to be compatible with the perspective of the philosophy of action in the Phenomenology of Spirit, that the meaning of action is socially defined. Fourth, in the Philosophy of Right Hegel arrives at a solution that makes these two viewpoints compatible. Hegel distinguishes between purpose and intention of action, and argues that purpose is a direct and individual purpose of action, and the intention is a socially defined meaning for this purpose.
