Abstract
Modern societies suffer from the crisis of the common good. It is a common phenomenon that the strong try to dominate the public sphere for personal interests. This article aims to find St. Augustine’s answer to this crisis in The City of God. St. Augustine criticized the common good concept of the Greek-Roman tradition and suggested a new understanding based on Christian theology. Aristotle and Cicero argued that man can grow into a good citizen by cultivating civic virtues. They represent the ancient notion that polis achieves the common good through justice and friendship. They expected that if all citizens participate in the public sphere and compete with each other for virtues, cities would surely prosper. However, for Augustine, it is simply impossible because, after Adam’s crime, all humans are corrupted by the original sin, which is the cause of all corruption in real politics. Augustine fundamentally criticized the roman politician Scipio's definition of the republic. If man does not know how to make the right relationship with God, he cannot know true justice, and then there would be no people who got consensus with true justice, nor association for the common good, no republic. In this age when Christians and non-Christians live together, many scholars have been researching to explore the possibility of common good in Augustine’s thoughts. It is impossible to survey all discussions in detail because each scholar has a very different position on this topic. This article begins an approach to the concept of the common good in Augustine’s thought by examining J. Lössl’s interpretation as a clue. Then it explains how we came to the point of Saeculum through H. Arendt’s discussion, which aroused interest in Augustine in modern times. Then, it introduces R.A. Markus’ Saeculum and J. Milbank’s criticism of it, and J.B. Elshtain’s discussion on the examples of practices for the common good. In conclusion, this paper argues that as a lawyer dealing with issues of law and justice in this world, it is possible to find a way to strengthen the common good through truth and freedom in Augustine’s The City of God.
