한국 근대시의 형성과 최남선의 산문시 －‘읽는 시’의 율적 가능성－

<국문초록> 이 글은 한국 근대시의 형성 과정에서 실패한 것으로 간주되어 왔던 최남선의 산문시를 1920년대 자유시의 원천으로서 성립시킬 수 있다는 점을 논증하고자 한 것이다. 한국 근대시는 노래하는 시와 읽는 시라는 두 개의 계열로 나뉘어 성립해 왔으며, 이 때 노래하는 시는 전통적인 형식으로 읽는 시는 새로운 형식으로 이해되었다. 노래하는 시가 리듬의 음성적 실현을 기반으로 하고 있다면, 독서의 방식으로 향유되는 읽는 시에서는 리듬이 문자적으로 실현된다. 최남선의 산문시는 시각적 휴지의 반복과 문자의 파편적 전개를 보여줌으로써 1920년대 자유시가 보여주었던 문자의 율(향률)의 구조를 선취하고 있다.
Abstract
This paper argues that Choi Namseon‘s prose poetry, which has been considered as a failed experiment in the formation of modern Korean poetry, is the true origin of free verse in the 1920s. Modern Korean poetry was formed within the dynamics of the two opposing conceptions of poetry: poems to sing and poems to read. The former was regarded as the traditional form of poetry and the latter as the new, modern form. If poetry to sing is based on the phonetic realization of rhythm, rhythm in poetry to read is realized in the form of the letter. Choi‘s prose poetry whose primary methods to realize rhythm were the visualized pauses and the fragmented unfolding of the letter can be considered as the pioneer of 1920s free verse‘s catacoustic rhythm, the rhythm of the letter.
