Abstract
The mammalian tooth development is govemed by sequential and reciprocal epithelial - mesenchymal interactions. DU11ng tooth development, aft밍 the completion of crown formation, the apical mesenchyme forms the developing periodontium while the inner and outer enamel epithelia fuse below the level of the crown cervical margin to produce a bilayered epitheli려 sheath t앙med Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath‘ Finally, the disintegrated root sheath generally remains as Malassez’s epithelial rest cells in the periodontal ligament. It is believed that they play an important functional role during root development. Although several sign떠ing pathways and transcription factors have been implicated in regulating molar crown development, relatively little is known about the regulation of root development. In this study, we will discuss the functional role of the Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath and the epithelial rests cell of Malassez with investigation of signailing pathways 와ld transcription factors in this article.
