이 글은 요한 세바스찬 바흐의 《요한수난곡》 이해를 위한 입문으로 기획된 것이며 이 작품의 가사가 되는 요한복음서의 수난내러티브, 마틴 루터의 신학, 그리고 바흐의 음악이라는 세 개의 커다란 주제가 논의를 이끌어가는 사고의 축으로 작동하고 있다. 요한복음서는 어떤 내용을 가진 문서였는지, 그리고 이 안에 담긴 수난내러티브의 성격은 어떠했는지, 이를 신학자 루터는 어떻게 읽어나갔으며 어떤 신학 언어로 재구성해 내가고 있는지 검토하였고, 또한 요한기자의 기록과 루터의 수난내러티브 읽음이 바흐의 음악에서 어떤 방식으로 구현되고 있는지 기술하였다. 다시 말하면, 이러한 신학적 읽음이 바흐의 음악 안에서 어떤 모양과 무늬의 음악적 읽음으로 변화되는지 논의한 것이다. 결국 이 글은 바흐의 음악이 수난내러티브를 더욱더 효과적으로, 그리고 극적으로 구현하는 수단이 됨을 지적하고 있다. 이러한 결론은 《요한수난곡》을 그것이 구상되고 연주된 신학적, 음악적 문맥 안에 위치시켰을 때 비로소 드러나는 것이다.
Abstract
The present article attempts to read Johann Sebastian Bach’s John Passion in theological terms, exploring the nature of John’s Passion narrative, Martin Luther’s theology, and Bach’s musical setting. By arguing that Bach’s John Passion needs to be understood in its liturgical context, this paper explicates various ways in which the work was conceived and performed. After elaborating the notion of Oratorio Passion, this article focuses upon the John’s Passion narrative, trying to articulate its theological significance found only in John’s account. By drawing upon similarities found both in John’s Passion narrative and Luther’s reading of it, this paper illustrates how Bach read it, delivering some of them through his musical setting. As the paper examines various aspects of text and music in theological terms, it hopes to provide a perspective through which John Passion can be further articulated and understood in a further refined and comprehensive way.
