Abstract
This article investigates how time is articulated and experienced in the transition and retransition of the second movement of Schubert’s last String Quartet (D887). The transition and retransition are representative formal units by which a goal-oriented passage and thus a progressive sense of time are distinctly anticipated. In the slow movement of his last String Quartet, Schubert manipulates our expectations associated with the Classical conventions of formal functions, resulting in a particular kind of time experience. Schubert scholars have explained Schubert’s transitions from the perspective of Schubert’s compositional technique, focusing in particular on the harmonic aspect. By turning to how listeners experience Schubert’s transition and retransition in D887/2, this article addresses the issue of time experience in his music.
