전공자율선택제를 계기로 삼은 학부교육의 정상화 제언

전공자율선택제도는 일부의 우려와 반대와는 달리 우리나라 교양교육은 물론 학부교육 전반의 정상화를 가져올 수 있는 계기로 수용될 수 있다. 글로벌 차원에서 고등교육의 근간이 되는 자유교육은 신입생이 학부과정에서 미리 전공을 결정하는 것이 아니라 재학 중 선택하는 것을 기본 요건으로 삼는다. 우리나라의 대학이 학과를 행 ․ 재정 기본 단위로 삼고 이를 모집 단위로 설정한 이래 벌어진 많은 문제가 결국 우리나라 고등교육의 경쟁력을 떨어뜨린 하나의 원인이 되었다면, 전공자율선택제의 확대는 우리나라 고등교육이 글로벌 차원의 자유교육에 한 걸음 가까이 가는 계기가 될 수 있다. 이 글은 전공자율선택제를 제대로 이해하고, 이 제도의 수용에 장애물로 작동하는 요소들은 무엇인지를 돌아보고, 전공자율선택제를 어떻게 발전시켜 나가야 할지를 탐색해 본다. 이를 위해 먼저 전공자율 선택제를 정확히 기술하고, 이를 자유교육의 차원으로 치환하여 재규정한 후, 자유교육 기반 교육과정 설계의 원칙을 따르는 개별 교과목 사례를 소개하고자 한다.
Abstract
Contrary to some concerns and opposition, the autonomic major selection system can be accepted as an opportunity to normalize not only ‘general education’ but also undergraduate education in Korea. Liberal education, which is the foundation of higher education on a global level, requires that freshmen choose their majors while attending school rather than deciding on them in advance during their undergraduate studies. If many problems that have arisen since Korean universities began to use departments as the basic units of administration and finance and set them as recruitment units have ultimately reduced the competitiveness of Korean higher education, the expansion of freshmen who choose their majors can be an opportunity for Korean higher education to take a step closer to global-level liberal education. This article aims to properly understand the autonomic major selection system, review the factors that act as obstacles to its acceptance, and explore how the autonomic major selection system should be developed. To this end, we will first accurately describe the autonomic major selection system, redefine it in terms of liberal education, and then introduce an individual subject cases that follow the principles of curriculum design based on liberal education.
