이 연구는 기록조사와 면접조사를 통해 방화범죄자 및 연쇄방화범죄자의 성장기 경험을 살펴본 것이다. 방화범죄자들은 성장과정에서 부모의 이혼(또는 별거), 사망 등으로 두 부모와 함께 동거하지 못한 사례들이 상대적으로 많이 발견되었으며, 따라서 방화범죄자들의 양육환경은 조손가정이거나 한부모가정의 비율이 상대적으로 높을 수밖에 없었다. 이처럼 조손가정이나 한부모가정에서 성장한 방화범죄자들은 어린시절을 불우하게 기억하고 있었으며, 이러한 환경으로 인해 학대나 방임의 경험을 가지고 있는 범죄자들도 다수 발견되었다. 방화범죄자들의 성장 시 가족 간 관계를 보면 연쇄 방화범의 경우 원만하지 않은 경우가 반 이상을 차지하고 있었고, 비연쇄 방화범의 경우에도 크게 다르지는 않았다. 가족 관계가 원만하지 않고, 교류하던 친구들이 없다는 것은 문제상황이나 갈등상황이 발생하였을 때 도움을 받을 수 있는 지지체계가 없다는 것을 의미한다. 또한 방화범죄자의 성장 시 가정 내 학대경험을 살펴본 결과, 연쇄방화범죄자의 약 10%가 학대 경험이 있었던 것으로 나타났으며, 이는 비연쇄 방화범보다 상대적으로 높은 비율을 나타내는 것이었다. 이들이 성장기에 경험한 양육환경, 가족간 관계, 학대경험, 가출경험 등은 성인기 삶의 양식에 커다란 영향을 주고 있다고 생각할 수 있다. 성장기의 양육환경과 학대경험은 그들의 성격을 형성하며, 그들이 문제상황에 처했을 때 그것을 극복하는 행동양식을 규정한다. 또한 그들의 가족간의 관계는 성인기에 이르기까지 지지체계를 구성하며, 가출경험은 향후 그들의 사회적 자본의 형성이 박탈되는 계기로 작용할 수 있는 것이다.
Abstract
This study examines growth experience of arson offenders through records research and interviews with them. It found that a single parent family background due to parental divorce, death of a parent or other reasons was prevalent among arson offenders. In other words, a greater number of those offenders spent youth in single parent or grandparent-headed homes. Most of them from single or grandparent families tended to remember they had disturbed childhood. Under the unfavorable family environment, some of arson perpetrators experienced childhood abuse or neglect. This study also found that more than half of serial arsonists had relationship problems within the family and non-serial arsonist also had relationship problems. Another distinct characteristic of arson offenders was that they had no close friend. It could be translated that they had no one to rely on or get help when they faced unexpected problems and relationship issues. The study looked into child abuse experience of serial arsonists in their families and learned that around ten percent of offenders reported child abuse. More serial arsonists were being abused in childhood than non-serial arsonists. Findings of the study indicate that impact of adverse growing-up experiences such as family problems, physical abuse, or running away from home extend into adulthood. Parenting environment as well as childhood abuse has a substantial impact on developing personalities and forming patterns of behavior toward certain problems. Furthermore, relationship within the family and support system last into adulthood and experience of running away from home in adolescence may deprive them of chances to build up social capital.
