Abstract

This study explores the iconography of “Buddha on Naga” focusing on its development from narrative to an icon. Buddha on Naga refers to the Buddha’s image which Buddha sits on serpent’s coil with its seven hoods behind his head. This iconography stems from one episode of Buddha’s life; when Buddha was in meditation after the Enlightenment, a Naga named Muchalinda came to protect him from a heavy rainstorm by covering him with its body and hood. Buddha on Naga image was first made to be reliefs in South India about 3rd century. These reliefs are distinctive as they depict Buddha sitting on the serpent’s coil contrary to the description of Buddhist literature which states that the serpent’s coil encircles the Buddha’s body entirely. This way of representation is intended to reveal Buddha’s presence clearly so that it might be considered to be natural in visual conception. Buddha on Naga image was made to be round sculptures in Bodhgaya about 7th century whose iconography is the same as those of South India. Among many Buddha’s life stories made to be reliefs, only a few of them were made to be round sculptures including Buddha on Naga. This event got the limelight along with the most important one, the Enlightenment, happened in Bodhgaya in Buddha’s life so that it was considered to be significant as well. Also, the increased popularity and reputation of Bodhgaya as a pilgrimage site in 7th century led to the creation of a widened landscape of Bodhgaya with various pilgrimage spots including the Muchalinda lake, the shrine, and the Buddha on Naga’s round sculpture. Buddha on Naga image was particularly favored in Southeast Asia, becoming the representative icon of Buddha. Some Buddha on Naga images have been discovered in Dvaravati art. Furthermore, the form of serpent got more elaborated; and the overall iconography became consistent in Khmer art from the 10th century. This phenomenon is due to the long-established belief in serpent which is in charge of earth and water; this indigenous serpent cult affected preference for Muchalinda story which narrates the protection of Buddha by a Naga. That is why Buddha on Naga image acquired great dominance in Southeast Asia as a Buddha’s representative icon.
