Abstract

The belief in the Great benevolent Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva much developed in Southeast Asia with the entry into the Classical period. The main characteristic of the Bodhisattva, which was created in Southeast Asia during the Classical Period, was that it was made into a multi-armed statue due to the influence of Tantrism. What's interesting is that only during the 9th and 11th centuries, a large number of four-armed Avalokiteśvara statues were created. This was also the time when various shapes of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva were established in the Pala Dynasty, which had an active relationship with the Southeast Asian dynasties. In Southeast Asia, which has the direct exchanges with some dynasties in India through the land and sea routes, the belief on the Bodhisattva developed almost at the same time. In Southeast Asia, Avalokiteśvara was also called “Lokeśvara” as well as “Lokanathā”. These different names could be found not only in sculptures unearthed in Southeast Asia, but also in Indian literature, such as Sadhanamala. In a broad sense, Lokanatha, a name of Avalokiteśvara, was used as the term to cover all of the various shapes, rather than to refer to the single Bodhisattva who has a particular appearance. In India, complex and diverse shapes of Lokanathā were gradually expanded, while in Southeast Asia, four-armed statue with the same pattern were the most popular in all regions at the same time. These changes are well found in the art of the Śrivijaya and the Śailendra dynasties, which were located in the Maritime Southeast Asia. Śrivijaya and Śailendra maintained close relationships through royal intermarriage, but it can see local features in the style of Lokanathā sculptures.
