영상 미디어에서의 장애에 대한 상품화와 인권문제: 영웅적 장애인 재현을 중심으로

초록

본고는 장애인 인식개선을 위한 실천으로 영상 미디어가 활용되면서 등장한 '영웅적 장애인 재현'과 '장애에 대한 상품화' 담론에 대해 고찰하고, 인권적 관점에서 장애인 재현 방안에 대한 논의를 통해 장애인에 대한 인식 개선과 향후 후속연구를 위한 기초자료 마련에 기여하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 문헌연구 방법과 담론분석 방법을 기초로, 장애인 재현 양상과 장애의 상품화 담론을 고찰하고 논의하는 탐색연구를 시행하였다. 연구 결과, 영상 미디어 제작 과정에서 장애인 당사자의 참여가 배제되면서, 비장애인의 시각에서 장애인의 모습이 재현되어 특정한 방식으로 정형화되고 있었다. 특히 장애인 성공 신화로 대표되는 ‘영웅적’ 장애인 재현 방식은 오히려 새로운 낙인을 부여하여, 장애를 상품화한다는 비판적 담론이 형성되고 있었다. 본고는 이 결과를 바탕으로 영상 미디어의 장애인 재현이 나아가야 할 지향점을 인권적 관점에서 논의하고 제언하였다.

Abstract

This study examined the discourse surrounding the ‘objectification of disability’ in the heroic representation of the disabled, aiming to discuss ways to portray them from a human rights perspective. The purpose of this study is to enhance awareness of disabilities and provide foundational data for future studies. Through an exploratory investigation utilizing bibliographic research and discourse analysis methods, stereotypes in the portrayal of the disabled and the discourse around the objectification of disability were examined. The research findings indicate that the exclusion of the disabled from the video media production process results in a standardized description of disability. Notably, recent representations often frame disability as something to be overcome rather than accepted, constructing heroic narratives that emphasize triumph over disability. However, this approach may inadvertently contribute to a ‘heroic stigma’ attached to the disabled. In light of these results, this study proposes a direction for representing the disabled in video media from a human rights perspective.
