초록

Pastors in immigrant churches in the United States are conditioned to exercise authoritarian and hierarchical leadership due to the influences of Confucianism, one culture, one race, and one language, and exercising that kind of leadership results in conflicts with the second generation Korean Americans who grew up in the United States, and ultimately leads to difficulties in pastoral ministry. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to explore what influenced the leadership of Koreans historically and culturally, the communication and leadership challenges Korean pastors face, and make some suggestions as to how to overcome those challenges and become effective cross-cultural pastors and missionaries. The thesis of the paper is that Koreans are culturally and historically conditioned to exercise authoritarian and hierarchical leadership due to the influences of Confucianism, and one race, one culture, and one language, but that can and should change in cross-cultural settings.
