초록
This study critically examines Eastern Orthodox view of original sin in Reformed position. Eastern Church has seriously different opinion on Adam's fall and original sin with Reformed theology. This study shows various views of original sin in Church history. The early church Fathers did not offer their detailed and clear explanation on original sin. Augustine later constituted his view of original sin in debating against the Pelagian heresy that denied the inheritance of Adam's sin. Unlike this, Eastern Orthodoxy understands Adam’s sin as the matter of individual choice and behavior based on the interpretation of Romans 5:12. Adam did not pass on his personal guilt to all his descendants. Thus the Orthodox Church permits that Adam's sin caused the death of all people. These positive position on human nature is related to other theological doctrines of Eastern Orthodoxy such as Theosis. However, following Augustinian view of original sin, Reformed theology has affirmed the doctrine of original sin, especially the imputation of Adam’s guilt. Adam’s sin caused all humans to loose all privileges. None of them can escape pollution from his sin. Reformed theology maintain the doctrine of total depravity. Throughout this study, we recognize clear difference between the Eastern and the Western Churches, and want to stand firmly on the biblical teaching. We believe that our enjoyment of redemption is from our true knowledge of human misery in which every body has imputed Adam’s guilt and has inherited his sinful nature since his fall. That knowledge is also necessary for understanding Christ’s deliverance, and it is conductive to a life of thanks and praise.
