초록
The purpose of this study is to highlight that the calling of the doctrinal theologian is not limited to keeping “sana doctrina (sound doctrines)” in line with the Gospel and the Scriptures but extended to embrace the broad horizons of applying them to various contexts of ecclesiastical life. Most of all doctrinal theologian must always be sensitive to the spiritual dimension of doctrines that are directly related to salvation and judgment. (1 Tim 4:16; 2 Tim 4:1-5) This paper goes about demonstrating this thesis by examining Calvin’s usage of the word, ‘doctrina’. The term appears in Calvin’s works more than 9500 times and Victor E. d’Assonville has written a dissertation on the usage of the term as well as an article on the same topic in a smaller scale. Gleaning from some of his insights this paper attempts to emphasize not only the pastoral and practical nature but also spiritual nature of Christian doctrines which lead to a rethinking of the task of the doctrinal theologian. This study is particularly significant in face of barren dogmatism and secular academism commonly found in current theological scholarship in Korea as well as in Asia.

This study is particularly significant in face of barren dogmatism and secular academism commonly found in current theological scholarship in Korea as well as in Asia.
