초록

The methodological issue in interpreting the psalms has been one of the crucial issues in psalms scholarship because what we have out of a text depends on what method we take to the text. During the last two centuries, many different methods and approaches have been proposed for psalms studies. However, there has been a tendency to utilize one single interpretative method in interpreting the psalms. The aim of this paper is thus to propose an appropriate interpretative tool, which makes it possible to deal with a variety of approaches and methods in interpreting the Psalms rather than the hegemony of any approach. It is my contention that a particular psalm should be read through the lens, which arises from “a synoptic vision of imagination” which helps us to uncover textual connections, thematic patterns, and figurations between psalms. To argue this, this paper first examines a synoptic vision of imagination and then verifies its necessity in interpreting the psalms holistically in order to establish it as a basic hermeneutical principle. Second, it argues that psalms studies should be primarily based on three major methodologies – the canonical approach, text-linguistic, and the literary approach by investigating them in turn since the synoptic vision of imagination results from the web of connectivity discovered by a variety of approaches and interpretative methods. It is suggested that these synthetic interpretative processes will allow the reader to acquire a synoptic vision of imagination, which is employed at a variety of levels, namely, the canonical, linguistic, and literary levels.
