Abstract
Lee Chang-dong’s film style and choice of subject matter had been driven generally by naturalism with realistic portraits of society. Since Secret Sunshine and Poetry Lee explores obviously different way to portray things and to tell about society. Fable form of such films is not so preoccupied with determined link between cause and effect, following another kind of efficiency, one that sidesteps the dilemma of representational mediation and ethical immediacy, and invite us to reframe the cartography of the perceptible, the thinkable and the feasible. These films enjoy especially constant ambivalent play of exchanges between illustration of a story and its suspension, between the verisimilitude of action and the aimlessness of life, between the fable in the Aristotelian sense as a dramatic and coherent progression of actions(muthos), and the cinema dreamed up by Epstein, as a continuous movement made up of an infinity of micro-movements, that Jacques Rancière said with the concept ‘contrary fable’.
