세계종교들의 인간관과 대리적 속죄의 의의

Views on Humanity in World Religions and the Significance of Vicarious Atonement

초록

인간의 본질에 대한 이해는 인간의 핵심 문제가 무엇이고, 인간이 추구해야 하는 삶의 목적이 무엇인지를 말해준다는 점에서 중요하다. 이것은 인간이 추구해야 하는 이상적 인간과 이상적 사회는 무엇이며, 어떤방식으로 실현 가능한지를 보여준다. 이 논문은 인간의 본질과 인간성에대해서 세계종교들의 관점을 살펴봄으로써, 기독교가 말하는 인간의 본질과 인간성에 대한 이해가 왜 그렇게 중요한지, 그리고 기독교의 핵심진리로서의 예수 그리스도의 대속이 얼마나 독특한 것인지 보여주고자한다. 이 논문에서는 힌두교, 불교, 유교, 이슬람교에서 말하는바 인간본질 이해와 인간성 이해를 다룬다. 세계종교들은 인간성에 대한 낙관론에 기초하여서, 인간의 자기완성과 이상사회 실현의 가능성을 주장하기때문에 인본주의적 특색을 띨 수밖에 없다. 반면에, 기독교는 원죄 및 죄성의 개념에 의거해서 인간성의 부패함과 무능함을 전제하므로 대속이라는 대리성(vicariousness)을 세계관적 구조상 요청하게 된다. 인간성을 낙관적, 긍정적으로 볼 때 두 가지 방면에서의 특징이 나타난다. 첫 번째, 인간은 자신의 노력으로 이상적 사회를 만들어낼 수 있다는 것이다. 두 번째, 인간은 자신의 노력으로 자기완성에 도달할 수 있다는 것이다. 자기완성에 도달한 자는 불교에서처럼 깨달은 자로서 붓다가될 수 있고, 유교에서처럼 덕을 갖춘 자로서 성인, 철인이 될 수도 있다. 세계종교들은 이상사회와 자기완성이 인간의 노력에 의해서 실현 가능하다고 본다는 점에서 인본주의적이다. 기독교는 인간의 노력으로는 이상사회와 자기완성을 성취할 수 없으며 오로지 하나님의 은혜와 개입에 의해서 그러한 것이 가능하다고 본다는 점에서 신본주의적이다. 전통적으로, 기독교는 그리스도의 죽음, 십자가에서의 대리적 속죄를 강조한다. 대리성이야말로 세계종교들과 비교했을 때 기독교에만 나타나는 특징이다.

Abstract

Understanding the essence of human nature is crucial as it reveals the fundamental questions about what the core issues of human beings are and what the purpose of life should be. It also sheds light on the ideal human and ideal society that humans should pursue and how they can be realized in some manner. This article explores the essence and nature of humans from the perspectives of various world religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Islam. Additionally, this article emphasizes the significance of Christianity’s understanding of human essence and nature. It necessarily highlights the uniqueness of Jesus Christ’s atonement for humans, which forms the core truth of Christianity. Christianity is unlike other religions that maintain an optimistic outlook on human nature and emphasize self-perfection and the realization of an ideal society. Instead, Christianity presupposes the corruption and incompetence of human beings due to the concept of original sin and sinfulness. Therefore, salvation through the vicariousness of atonement is postulated within the structure of Christian worldview. When human nature is viewed optimistically and positively, two key aspects arise. First, this positivism suggests that humans have the potential to create an ideal society through their own endeavors. This idea can be found in Confucianism and Islam. Second, this positivism implies that human beings can achieve self-perfection through their own efforts. In Buddhism, this achievement of self-perfection is exemplified by attaining enlightenment and becoming a Buddha. In Confucianism, this achievement is represented by becoming a sage, a person who has cultivated virtue. Christianity, on the other hand, takes a theocentric perspective and asserts that an ideal society and self-perfection cannot be attained through human efforts. Further, Christianity emphasizes that such achievements are possible only through God’s grace and intervention. Hence, the central focus of Christianity is the vicarious atonement of Jesus Christ on the cross. This substitutionary nature of Christ’s atonement is a distinctive characteristic of Christianity when compared to other world religions.
