Abstract

This study was aimed at elucidating the roles of 'dramatic circumstances' and 'inciting incidents', the cores of the principles of stories suggested by David Howard and Robert McKee, in a story, and their correlation. In the main body of this article, it is attempted to help understanding of dramatic circumstances and inciting incidents through the clear description, and their distinction from their application or other stages of a story is discussed. In this, the backward design of dramatic circumstances and the understanding of the difference between inciting incidents and beginning are included. Then, the relationship of the two principles of stories established through such analysis and discussion, and their flow are investigated. An inciting incident refers to the moment when the life balance of the protagonist is broken through an incident. As reflected in the expression 'inciting', it is distinct from other common incidents in the story, which depends on whether the incident changes the protagonist's life in a completely different direction. Dramatic circumstances are explained with the sentence 'Somebody wants something badly and is having difficulty getting it'. Somebody here means the 'character', something the 'goal' of the character, and difficulty the 'antagonist' or 'obstacles'. Therefore, the story of a film based on this principle can be said to be a process in which the audience actually identifies the character's goal and sees whether the goal is achieved or not in the fight against the antagonist. Through this, it was confirmed that if 'beginning' is the beginning of the story, an ‘inciting incident’ is the true beginning that drives the story into the full-scale development, and the balance of the dynamic relationship between the protagonist and the antagonist was investigated through the backward design in the 'dramatic circumstances'. In addition, it was also found that the inciting incident happening to the protagonist creates dramatic circumstances to the protagonist. As a result, this study was an exploration of two researchers' theories that represented the working principles of a story through specific examples and variations of inciting incidents and dramatic circumstances. The understanding of the difference between inciting incidents and beginning, and the design of dramatic circumstances and reverse circumstances correspond to the latter. In addition to this process, this study also identified the link between the two principles although they were constructed by different researchers. This study was initiated from the notion that the principles of stories are common although each author writes a different book, and eventually led to an analysis on which of the two principles was presented first in the stages of a story and how it affected the other.
