시나리오 창작의 주제 설정에 관한 연구

시나리오 창작을 위한 ‘주제’의 설정이 중요하다는 것에 대해서는늘 강조되어오고 있지만, 주제의 중요성 자체에 대한 인식에 비해 주제 자체의 정의나 주제의 유무 판단, 이야기 안에서의 주제의 적용이나 주제에 대한 분석이 창작과정이나 내러티브 분석과정에서 결여되어 있는 경우가 많다. 주제와 소재의 혼동, 주제가 없는 이야기 창작,주제가 이야기로 다루어지기에 적합하지 않은 사례 역시 모두 포함된다. 이에 본 논문은 창작자와 연구자들의 주제에 대한 오해를 개선하고명확한 정의를 통해 주제에 접근함과 동시에 주제 설정의 방법론에 관한 연구를 부가적으로 진행했다. 이를 위해 여러 시나리오 창작 연구자료에 수록된 주제에 관한 기술을 살펴보고 창작된 영화의 레퍼런스일부를 본문에 다루어 연구에 대한 구체적인 접근을 해보았다. 먼저 주제에 대한 정의는 셰일라 커런 버나드, 로버트 맥기, 노다코고, 에릭 로스, 시드 필드, 데이비드 하워드, 린다 카우길, 샘 스밀리, 하유상 등 다양한 작가와 작법 연구자들이 제시하는 주제 설정에대한 의견을 나열하여 범주화해 보았으며 이러한 내용이 실제로 영화의 이야기에서 적용되는가를 확인하기 위해 기존에 제작된 영화들의주제를 분석했다. 이를 통해 이론적으로 정의된 주제의 의미가 실제로 타당한가를 확인할 수 있었으며 비교를 위한 레퍼런스로는 상업영화와 독립 장편영화, 단편영화 등 상이한 제작형태를 가지는 영화의시나리오를 채택했다. 분석해본 연구 자료들을 통해 시나리오 작법 모델들이 주장하는 주제에 대한 정의나 설정이 실제로 창작자들의 이야기 구성에서도 적용됨을 확인할 수 있었으며 아울러 작가나 연출자들이 주제라는 용어로자신의 이야기를 설명하는 사례가 많지 않다는 연구 결과 역시 얻게되었다. 부가적으로 진행된 연구는 창작의 초기 단계인 시놉시스 단계에서의 주제 설정이 가능한가였는데 창작의 효율성 측면에서 시놉시스 기술단계에서 주제를 도출할 수 있다면 시나리오를 완성하고 검토하는시간보다 짧은 시간 안에 영화화 가능성을 타진할 수 있기 때문이다. 이를 위한 연구의 결과로 주제의 설정이 가능하다는 것 역시 검증할수 있었다.
Abstract
Emphasizing the importance of story that is relevant to the first departure in the creation of movies have scarcely overlooked in movie history. The following backs that up; Many prospective writers attended a seminar of screenplay, which is held annually by Robert McKee, and many literatures are translated actively in the Korean publishing world, which touch on the creative theory by Syd field & David Howard. Moreover, in composing screenplay, the fact that “theme” is relevant to the first departure of the story is always emphasized in creative education sites and film analysis media. By the way, there is something irony that could be found and revealed when teaching students in education sites and exploring previously research data. The irony is that when carrying out the course of creation or narrative analysis, lack in defining the theme, judging which or not the theme is involved, considering how the theme is applied, analyzing the theme could be discovered. For example, prospective writers who compose screenplay with setting materials as theme because they confuse theme with materials could be discovered frequently. It leads to the situation in which there is no theme or there is theme but it is inconsistent with the story. In addition, film analysis data in which there is precise analysis for each scene or sequence but lack of analysis for theme, which the screenplay of being unified story is intended to present, could be discovered frequently. Therefore this article aims to straighten out the misunderstanding of some writers or researchers in setting the theme and approach the theme through determining the definition, as well as study the methodology for setting the theme. For this aim, we investigate descriptions which are included in various research data for composing screenplay and dig deeper into what writers are trying to convey a theme in the text by using parts of references in previously made films.
