Abstract
This paper is intended to thoroughly examine the concept and form of plan-séquence from the aesthetic horizon of Bazin's realism, and at the same time to interpret and diagnose the meaning and potential of plan-séquence from the present point of view. According to Bazin, cinema has continuously evolved in the direction of realism. In particular, the plan-sequence of modern films completed by Rossellini and Welles realized the true continuity of reality on the screen, allowing the audience to voluntarily produce meaning for reality while directly interacting with the complex and ambiguous real world. Plan-séquence, described as the most advanced film language by Bazin, is not simply a long-duration shot, but an optimal form of revealing the objective meaning that each image implies with a concrete density of reality. It cannot be said that Bazin's concept of plan-séquence maintains the same aesthetic and ethical utility in the changed situation of the current film, which is going through a period of media and technological transition. However, in the experiments to explore cinematic time, plan-séquence is still problematic as a concept that contains the fundamentals of film as a temporal art along with the exploration of reality. And it is at this point that Bazin's theory has a present meaning.
